Liverpool Fans Would ‘Rather Play With 10’ Than See One Player Again After Brentford Draw

It was an emotional day at Anfield as Liverpool bid farewell to two of the greatest players in the club’s history. Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson bowed out as Reds icons, but one of their now ex-teammates has been told to follow them out the exit door.

Arne Slot’s side limped over the line to Champions League qualification, bringing an end to a disastrous season for the former champions. Salah added a final assist to his tally as he fired the ball across for Curtis Jones to open the scoring. 

Both men were given their opportunity to receive a round of applause as they were substituted in the final stages of the game. Brentford equalised through Kevin Schade, as the campaign ended on another sour note.

Liverpool Star Struggles Yet Again After Poor Season

One man who has often frustrated the Anfield faithful throughout the season is Cody Gakpo. The Dutchman was making a strong case to overtake Luis Diaz as the starting left winger in 2024-25, but has struggled since actually being handed that responsibility.

Starting through the middle in the absence of Hugo Ekitike and Alexander Isak, Gakpo once again failed to make a significant impact for his side. He managed just 30 touches in the whole match, losing the ball eight times.

Two shots, both of which were blocked, and a missed chance didn’t do much to suggest he’s the man to replace the output of the departing Salah. Whether it’s on the left or in the middle, Gakpo has lots of work to do if he wants fans back on his side. 

Liverpool Fans Fume at Cody Gakpo vs Brentford

Taking to social media during and after the match, Liverpool fans made their feelings very clear. They want to see the forward sold in the summer transfer window. 

At the very least, they don’t want him to be an option as a striker, as one fan said: “I hope this is the last time we ever see Cody Gakpo in a CF position. May as well play with ten.”

“Really need to make sure that one of the wide players we sign this summer is also comfortable playing down the middle because this Gakpo reign of terror can not be allowed to continue,” another said.

Some were a bit harsher and suggested they don’t want to see him pull on the famous red shirt again. One said: “I never wish you to see Gakpo play for Liverpool again,” while another added: “In all honesty, we should sell Gakpo.”

“Gakpo is just so ineffective. Offers absolutely nothing,” was the brutal summary of his performance from an extremely frustrated Red.
