Ibrahima Konate could be dropped as one of Liverpool’s first-choice defenders next season, even if he signs a new contract.

Earlier this year, the Frenchman was heavily linked with a move to Real Madrid, following in the footsteps of former teammate Trent Alexander-Arnold.

As he enters the final few weeks in his current deal, Los Blancos’ interest in the 26-year-old has cooled. 

However, the Reds defender recently confirmed he is set to stay on Merseyside and is awaiting the formalisation of a new agreement.

The Frenchman has experienced a turbulent season and was the Liverpool player most at fault for the goal conceded in the Merseyside derby on Sunday.

On the latest episode of Inside Liverpool, ex-boxer Paul Smith explained why Konate has frustrated supporters during this campaign.

He said: “My problem with Konate was how he got distracted when Real Madrid were interested, his form dipped after that, and the fans won’t like that.

“They want you to give 100 per cent for the shirt while you are here, and then the fans will adore you.

“He can be great, and he’s reliable at times, but he hasn’t been this season. He’s not the only one either, there have been a few players who have just been under par and not living up to their own high standards.”

Competition heating up

The Reds signed Jeremy Jacquet as their second-most expensive defender on January’s deadline day, though the France Under-21 international remained in Ligue 1 with Rennes for the rest of the season.

Additionally, Giovanni Leoni is nearing a return after sustaining an ACL injury on his debut for the club.

With more players in contention for selection next season, Anfield may see a different back line, providing much-needed healthy competition.

Former Liverpool winger Jermaine Pennant was critical of Konate and considers the defender a potential backup option should he sign a new deal. 

He said: “After this season, seeing how easy it is to lose key players and for them to get key injuries, I think I would be happy for him to stay.

“Giovanni Leoni will be coming back soon from injury, and we have Jeremy Jacquet coming in the summer.

“It will be like having two new defenders, it will give them a chance to make a name for themselves if Van Dijk stays.

“I would like to keep Konante, potentially as a main defender, but if he’s not playing well, other players can step in. If someone picks up an injury, then he can step in.

“On the back of this season I wouldn’t be surprised if he loses his place, but I wouldn’t mind him staying at the club.”

A summer of change

Jacquet appears to be a long-term successor for his French counterpart, though it is unlikely he will immediately take a place in the starting 11, as the 20-year-old is currently recovering from a shoulder injury and has not played for Rennes since February.

With potentially two experienced Premier League defenders already in the squad, Arne Slot will hope the youngsters are able to learn their trade throughout next season with less pressure.

However, Liverpool is expected to have a busy summer in other departments, particularly after Mohammed Salah and Andy Robertson confirmed they will leave the club at the end of the season after nine years of service.
