In 2012, not long after a young mountain gorilla was killed by a poacher’s snare in Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park, researchers witnessed an extraordinary event. Two juvenile gorillas were seen teaming up to locate and disable other traps nearby.
According to scientists observing the behavior, the young gorillas acted quickly and decisively—indicating they were already familiar with the dangers the traps posed. Their actions suggested previous experience with such snares and a clear understanding of how to safely dismantle them.
