Last weekend on the podcast, Eric had a short rant about Jason Cundy. I found it really funny because he described Cundy’s personality perfectly.
Cundy is someone I don’t take seriously. He says silly things, so I don’t get upset about him. But sometimes, he says things that deserve a response like last week when he talked about José Mourinho possibly coaching in Scotland.
Cundy claimed that Mourinho was trying to start a rumor, but in reality, people like Cundy are the ones spreading it. Mourinho simply made a comment, and they took the bait. Smart people didn’t believe him for a second. Most didn’t even care.
Many football commentators especially in England, but also some in Scotland focus too much on the celebrity side of the game. In England, ex-players and famous figures get a lot of attention just for speaking.
Mourinho has been a favorite of the English press since he first called himself “The Special One.” This has helped him hide his mistakes because, truthfully, his career has been going downhill for a while. But some people admire him so much that they believe everything he says even when he’s just putting on a show.
In some ways, Mourinho became famous because of us. He proved himself as a great coach when he won the UEFA Cup final against us. A year later, he won the Champions League, and it was clear he was one of the best coaches in the world. It was only a matter of time before he went to England.
I’ve talked before about Mourinho’s first press conference at Chelsea. The English reporters asked him if he was ready for the Premier League as if winning the Champions League wasn’t enough proof! That’s when he called himself “The Special One” and built his media image. He knows exactly how to control the press, especially in England. But he’s also good at it in Scotland.
Do I think Mourinho will ever manage a Scottish club? No chance. The only way it happens is if he disappears from the spotlight for years and then decides to be a big fish in a small pond. Right now, he wouldn’t get a top job in England, so he’d be desperate for attention.
If Mourinho ever came to Scotland, it would be all about him. The media would be obsessed with him, and he would love it. He’d constantly complain about referees, argue with rival managers, criticize his own players, and maybe even fight with the fans. But all of this would serve one purpose promoting José Mourinho, not his club.
That’s always the problem with Mourinho. Over time, he becomes the main story. It’s not just about his team playing well he needs all the credit. He feeds off drama. And when his coaching isn’t enough to keep people interested, he creates chaos instead.
Cundy, of course, is too foolish to see that Mourinho played him like a puppet. But the rest of us understand exactly what Mourinho was doing. Would he ever coach in Scotland? Maybe at the end of his career, when he has no other choices. The bigger question is: Would any Scottish club even want him?
For Celtic, Mourinho would be expensive, bring a lot of problems, and offer no guarantees of success. But we’re not the type of club that chases flashy names anyway.
Meanwhile, the media both in England and Scotland played right into Mourinho’s hands. He wasn’t seriously considering Scotland. He was just making sure people still talk about him, acting like he might one day “bless” Scottish football with his presence.
And that’s the real Mourinho full of arrogance and ego. The sad part? Some people still don’t see it.
