Very very weird’: Adebayo Akinfenwa faces backlash for his Diogo Jota tribute

The football world was left in shock on the morning of July 3rd, as news broke that Liverpool forward Diogo Jota had tragically died in a car accident in Spain, alongside his brother Andre.

Among the many tributes pouring in, one in particular caused a stir: a post by former Wycombe striker Adebayo Akinfenwa

shared a graphic showing himself from behind in his Wycombe kit (number 20) standing beside a fading image of Jota in his Liverpool number 20 shirt, along with the caption:

“We both wore the 20, U played the game with flair & heart. The pitch was your canvas, at times you were a work of art. From one number 20 to another, rest easy, Jota. Gone too soon, never forgotten. prayers 2ur family.”

While likely well-intentioned, the post quickly drew criticism for appearing self-centered, with fans calling it ‘weird’ and accusing Akinfenwa of ‘making it about himself.’

Fan Reactions:

@TakeABow_Son: “Not sure why you’d have a random pic of you in a tribute, even if you wore the same no. Strange.”

@TobyStace: “Very strange post”

kunal_paltani: “Should not have your picture there !! Seems really weird”

@Xwd_44: “How have you made this about yourself??”

@declan_19: “Why have you done this, this is abit weird”

@ConfusedUnited: “Get out there and make it about yourself. bro doesn’t know how many players on this earth wore number 20.”

@ffceling: “Deleted it and made a new one because you knew it was out of order”

@_NSNO_: “Strange post this btw , main character syndrome much?”
