The Indiana Hoosiers women’s basketball team pulled off a stunning upset over the No. 8 Ohio State Buckeyes, winning 71-61. The Hoosiers took control of the game early and never looked back, led by a trio of players who each scored 16 points.
Sydney Parrish, Yarden Garzon, and Shay Ciezki were the stars of the show for Indiana, each contributing 16 points to the team’s total. Parrish, a junior guard, was particularly impressive, shooting 6-12 from the field and 4-8 from three-point range. Garzon, a sophomore forward, added 7 rebounds to her 16 points, while Ciezki, a freshman guard, chipped in with 4 assists.
The Hoosiers’ victory was a testament to their strong team defense, which held the Buckeyes to just 36% shooting from the field. Indiana also outrebounded Ohio State 40-32, with senior forward Mackenzie Holmes grabbing a game-high 10 rebounds.
Ohio State’s leading scorer, junior guard Jacy Sheldon, was held to just 12 points on 4-14 shooting from the field. The Buckeyes’ struggles on offense were compounded by their poor shooting from beyond the arc, where they made just 2 of 15 attempts.
The Hoosiers’ win was a significant one, as it marked their first victory over a top-10 team this season. Indiana improved to 16-6 overall and 7-5 in the Big Ten Conference, while Ohio State fell to 19-4 overall and 10-3 in the conference.
Indiana’s head coach, Teri Moren, was thrilled with her team’s performance. “I’m so proud of our kids,” Moren said. “They played with a lot of heart and a lot of toughness. We knew it was going to be a challenge, but our kids rose to the occasion.”
The Hoosiers’ victory was also a testament to their improved play of late. After struggling through a tough stretch in January, Indiana has won four of its last five games, including victories over ranked opponents Michigan and Ohio State.
With the win, the Hoosiers moved into sole possession of fifth place in the Big Ten standings. They will look to build on their momentum when they host Purdue on Sunday.
