The Las Vegas Raiders have been careful during this offseason, not spending too much money on their players who became free agents. Even though they lost some important players, they also made a lot of new signings to fill the gaps.
They tried to strengthen every weak spot on their team, even if the new players aren’t very well-known. Many of these new additions could help the team next season, but the Raiders still need to do more.
Field Yates from ESPN thinks that the Raiders trading for quarterback Geno Smith was the best move of the offseason. He believes Smith’s past experience with coach Pete Carroll makes this trade even better.
Yates said, “The Raiders trading for quarterback Geno Smith was a smart move. For a team needing a reliable quarterback, Smith was probably the best option. Getting a solid starter for just a third-round pick was a bargain. His connection with coach Pete Carroll gives me more confidence in this trade.”
By bringing in Smith, the Raiders now have an experienced starting quarterback. They can still pick a quarterback in the NFL Draft if they want, but there is no pressure to do so since they already have Smith.
The Raiders should be better next season, especially if they continue to add players to their offensive line and skill positions. However, their defense still needs work, especially at cornerback, linebacker, and the defensive line. These problems must be fixed.
The offense seems to be improving, but it will take time to see how the new defense performs. Defensive coordinator Patrick Graham has done a great job in the past two seasons, but he will have a very different group of players next season.
After a few disappointing seasons, the Raiders seem to be moving in a new direction. However, they still have a lot of challenges ahead.
