MADRID (AP) Tennis legend Serena Williams has been named the recipient of Spain’s prestigious Princess of Asturias Award for Sports, in recognition of her extraordinary achievements throughout her career, organizers announced on Wednesday.
The 43-year-old American icon secured an impressive 73 singles titles over her career, including 23 Grand Slam victories. In 2022, she announced her decision to step away from professional tennis, turning her focus toward family life and her expanding business ventures.
Valued at €50,000 (approximately $57,000), the Princess of Asturias Award is one of eight honors granted annually, spanning areas such as the arts, literature, science, and more.
The awards are presented each autumn in Oviedo, a city in northern Spain, during a formal ceremony overseen by Princess Leonor.
Notable previous recipients of the sports award include Olympic ski champion Lindsey Vonn, the International Olympic Committee’s Refugee Olympic Team, and New Zealand’s national rugby squad
