The No. 16 ranked men’s tennis team is set for a pivotal weekend as they prepare to host the University of Florida at home on Friday before traveling to face Mississippi State on Sunday. With SEC play heating up, this two-match slate could play a key role in shaping the team’s postseason outlook.
The squad enters the weekend with a 10-4 overall record and a 3-1 mark in SEC play, coming off an impressive 4-1 victory over No. 22 Auburn last weekend. Led by senior standout and top-20 nationally ranked player, Alex Chen, the team has been gaining momentum after a challenging start to the season. Chen, who is 9-3 at the No. 1 singles spot, will face stiff competition this weekend against some of the top talent in the conference.
The action begins Friday at 5 p.m. when the Gators visit. Florida, currently ranked No. 21 nationally, brings a deep and talented roster to town, including two top-50 singles players. Despite a 7-6 overall record, Florida remains one of the most dangerous teams in the SEC, having already knocked off two top-15 opponents this spring. Last season, Florida edged out the team 4-3 in a thriller, so there is certainly extra motivation heading into this year’s matchup.
“Florida is always a tough battle,” head coach Mark Reynolds said. “They’re well-coached and fight for every point. We’ve been playing with a lot of energy, and if we can maintain our level, I like our chances at home.”
After the home showdown, the team will quickly turn around and head to Starkville, Mississippi, to take on Mississippi State on Sunday at 1 p.m. Mississippi State, ranked No. 34, is 9-5 overall and 2-2 in SEC play. They are led by junior Luka Petrovic, who has won six straight singles matches, anchoring the Bulldogs’ lineup.
Traveling on short rest and playing outdoors in potentially warmer conditions will test the team’s depth and endurance. Coach Reynolds emphasized the importance of staying focused throughout the weekend.
“These SEC weekends are demanding,” Reynolds said. “It’s about managing your body, staying sharp mentally, and competing hard from the first ball to the last. We’ve put ourselves in a good position in the standings, but every match is crucial.”
Doubles play will be key for both matches, as the team has gone 8-0 this season when securing the doubles point. Look for the pairing of Chen and sophomore Diego Ramirez at the top doubles line to play a pivotal role, as they have notched a 7-2 record so far.
