Netflix has officially announced the completion of production on a new documentary chronicling the life and career of the legendary guitarist Johnny Thunders. Titled Johnny Thunders: Born to Lose, the film is scheduled for release on July 15, 2025, coinciding with what would have been Thunders’ 73rd birthday.

“We’re glad to announce that we’re done with production,” said Lisa Reynolds, Netflix’s Vice President of Original Documentaries. “It’ll be released on July 15, 2025, and we can’t wait for audiences to experience the compelling story of Johnny Thunders.”

The documentary delves into Thunders’ early days with the New York Dolls, his formation of The Heartbreakers, and his tumultuous solo career. It features rare archival footage, personal anecdotes from friends and collaborators, and insights into his influence on the punk and glam rock scenes.

Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Jonas Åkerlund, known for his work on music documentaries and biopics, the film promises an unflinching look at Thunders’ life. “Johnny’s story is one of raw talent and relentless passion,” Åkerlund stated. “We aimed to capture the essence of his spirit and the mark he left on music history.”

The production team worked closely with Thunders’ family and estate to ensure an authentic portrayal. “We wanted to honor Johnny’s legacy by telling his story with honesty and respect,” said producer Mark Davidson. “Collaborating with those who knew him best was essential to achieving that goal.”

Fans can expect interviews with notable musicians influenced by Thunders, as well as those who shared the stage with him. The documentary also addresses the controversies and struggles that marked his life, providing a comprehensive view of the man behind the music.

In anticipation of the release, Netflix plans to host a special premiere event in New York City, celebrating Thunders’ contributions to the music world. Details about the event will be announced in the coming months.

Music historians and critics are already praising the documentary’s approach. “Johnny Thunders was a pivotal figure in rock history,” said music critic Elaine Carter. “This documentary does an excellent job of capturing his complex persona and enduring influence.”

Johnny Thunders: Born to Lose will be available for streaming exclusively on Netflix starting July 15, 2025. Subscribers can look forward to an intimate exploration of a musician whose legacy continues to resonate.
