Liverpool FC has spoken out over the death of Diogo Jota.
The 28-year-old tragically died alongside his brother, Andre Silva, in a car crash in Spain in the early hours of this morning, with the football team now issuing a heartfelt statement over their deaths.
News of the brothers’ passing has led to floods of tributes for the former Wolves player and Liverpool FC footballer, with the likes of Piers Morgan and Gary Neville issuing their condolences.
In a post on X (Twitter), Liverpool FC commented on the death of Diogo Jota, expressing how “devastated” the club are.
The statement read: “Liverpool Football Club are devastated by the tragic passing of Diogo Jota.”
Accompanying the tribute to the player, is a black and white photo of the footballer in his Liverpool FC kit.
As well as a social media post, the club posted an update regarding Jota’s death on its web page which read: “Liverpool Football Club are devastated by the tragic passing of Diogo Jota.
“The club have been informed the 28-year-old has passed away following a road traffic accident in Spain along with his brother, Andre.
“Liverpool FC will be making no further comment at this time and request the privacy of Diogo and Andre’s family, friends, teammates and club staff is respected as they try to come to terms with an unimaginable loss.
“We will continue to provide them with our full support.”
The footballer reportedly died in the early hours of this morning in a car crash near Zamora, Spain at around 12.40am local times, as the pair headed in the direction of Benavente, news agency EFE reported.
Emergency services in the Castilla and Leon region confirmed the crash with a statement which read: “The 1-1-2 Castilla y León operations room received several calls reporting a vehicle accident at Km. 65 of the A-52, in the municipality of Cernadilla, Zamora. A car was reported to have been involved in an accident and the vehicle was on fire.
“1-1-2 notified the Zamora Traffic Police, the Zamora Provincial Council Fire Brigade, and the Sacyl Emergency Coordination Center (CCU) of this accident.
“From there, a Medical Emergency Unit (UME) and the Primary Care Medical Staff (MAP) from the Mombuey Health Center were sent, who confirmed the death of two people on the scene.”
Local authorities have since published an update on the tragedy, with reports suggesting a tyre had burst on the vehicle and the car then left the road.
A statement from the Guardia Civil reads: “A road accident occurred at 12.30am this morning at kilometre 65 of the A-52 motorway, in the municipality of Cernadilla, Zamora.
“A vehicle left the road and everything indicates a tyre burst while overtaking. As a result of the accident, the car caught fire and both people were killed.
“Pending the completion of forensic tests, one of the deceased has been identified as Diogo Jota, a Liverpool FC player, and his brother, Andre Felipe.”
The sad news of Jota’s death comes only 11 days after his wedding to wife, Rute Cardoso.
The pair have three children together.
