
LEWIS HAMILTON AGREES WITH MAX VERSTAPPEN ON RETURN OF V10 Engines WITH A CONDITION
Lewis Hamilton has agreed with Max Verstappen that bringing back V10 engines in Formula 1 would be a good idea, but only under one condition.
F1 officials are considering keeping the current engine rules until 2028 and then reintroducing V10 engines, which were last used in 2005. However, the new engines would use fully sustainable fuels.
If this happens, the expensive and advanced power units planned for 2026 would be canceled. These 2026 engines were supposed to remove the MGU-K system and increase electrical power by almost 300%.
Big car brands like Audi and Honda have already committed to F1 based on the 2026 rules. General Motors is also working on an engine for 2028, partnering with Cadillac, which will use Ferrari engines in 2026 and 2027. Some F1 leaders, including Christian Horner and Zak Brown, have warned that changing the rules now would be a mistake, comparing it to “Cinderella leaving the building” or “the genie being out of the bottle.”
Current world champion Max Verstappen believes a V10 engine would be “much better than what we have now.” He also hinted that he might stay in F1 beyond 2028 if these engines return.
When asked about this, Hamilton agreed that bringing back V10s would be great, but only if they use sustainable fuels.
“The V6 engines never sounded great,” Hamilton said. “I remember going to my first F1 race in 1996 at Spa. When Michael Schumacher passed through Turn 1, I was just 12 or 13 years old, and I could feel the vibrations in my chest. That was an incredible experience, but over the years, we’ve lost that.”
He added, “If we can bring back those amazing sounds while still meeting our sustainability goals, then why not? But it’s funny because they switched from V10s to V6s to save money, yet making these V6 engines work has been very expensive. Also, with all the battery packs we’ve used, are they really more sustainable? Maybe we should focus on sustainable fuels instead, as that would be a better long-term solution.”
