IU basketball assistant offers counterpoint to Matt Painter: “Fans just want to see us play hard”

Indiana University basketball assistant coach, Mike Roberts, offered a counterpoint to Purdue head coach Matt Painter’s recent comments about the intensity of the IU-Purdue rivalry. Painter had stated that the rivalry had lost some of its luster in recent years, citing the lack of competitiveness in the series.

However, Roberts disagrees with Painter’s assessment, suggesting that the fans’ expectations are simpler than that. “Fans just want to see us play hard,” Roberts said. “They want to see us give it our all, play with passion, and leave everything on the court.”

Roberts believes that the intensity of the rivalry is still very much alive, and that the fans’ enthusiasm is a testament to that. “When we play Purdue, the energy in the building is electric,” Roberts said. “Our fans are passionate, and they expect us to give it our all. They don’t care about the X’s and O’s as much as they care about seeing us play with heart.”

Roberts also pointed out that the rivalry is about more than just the game itself. “It’s about the history, the tradition, and the bragging rights,” Roberts said. “Our fans take pride in being part of this rivalry, and they expect us to represent the university with class and competitiveness.”

While Painter may have been referring to the competitive balance between the two teams, Roberts believes that the fans’ perspective is different. “Fans don’t care about the margin of victory or the competitiveness of the game,” Roberts said. “They care about seeing us play with passion, energy, and determination. If we do that, they’ll be happy, regardless of the outcome.”

While coaches may focus on the competitive aspects of the game, fans are more concerned with seeing their team play with heart and passion.
