Diogo Jota was driving to the Spanish port city of Santander to catch a ferry to the UK after being advised not to fly due to recent lung surgery, according to reports from CNN Portugal.
The Liverpool forward, 28, was accompanied by his younger brother Andre Silva, 26, when their Lamborghini crashed and caught fire in the province of Zamora around 00:30 on Thursday morning.
Portuguese journalist Rui Laura confirmed that Jota was planning to continue his journey to Liverpool by road after arriving in England via ferry.
Fellow reporter Victor Pinto added that Jota occasionally avoided flying because of recurring but non-serious pulmonary discomfort.
Spanish authorities suspect the crash was caused by a tyre blowout during an overtaking manoeuvre, which led the car off the road and into flames.
The tragedy occurred just 11 days after Jotaэs wedding to longtime partner Rute Cardoso, with Liverpool now mourning the devastating loss of one of their own.
