Emma Raducanu started her Miami Open with a strong and confident win, beating Japanese wildcard Sayaka Ishii 6-2, 6-1.
This victory was important for Raducanu after her early exit at Indian Wells earlier this month. That match was her first since a scary experience with a stalker who followed her to three different tournaments in Asia.
At Indian Wells, she lost 6-3, 6-2 to Moyuka Uchijima and said she wanted to “improve everything” before playing in Miami, which is part of the big ‘Sunshine Double’ tournaments along with Indian Wells.
She made those improvements, showing great serving and control in her match against Ishii. Although Ishii, ranked 188th in the world, had a few powerful shots, she made too many mistakes, and Raducanu took full advantage.
After a bit of a challenge in the first set, Raducanu stepped up her game in the second, winning easily. She will now face a tougher opponent in the second round, American 10th seed Emma Navarro.
