Emma Raducanu Loses in Miami Open Quarter-Finals to Jessica Pegula
Emma Raducanu’s journey in the Miami Open ended after losing to Jessica Pegula in the quarter-finals. The American, ranked fourth, won the match 6-4, 6-7 (3-7), 6-2.
Raducanu fought hard and pushed the match into a third set but couldn’t keep up with Pegula. She had six chances to break Pegula’s serve but only managed to take one. Despite her efforts, Pegula proved too strong in the final set.
This was Raducanu’s best tournament performance since winning the US Open in 2021. She played well in the second set but struggled with Miami’s hot and humid weather, which reached 70% humidity. At times, she looked overheated and uncomfortable. She had five set points but couldn’t finish them, though she managed to win the second set in the tiebreak.
“I felt really dizzy and faint. It was very humid, and we had a long wait before the match, which may have affected me. The points were long and tough,” Raducanu said after the match. “I need to take some time to figure things out and plan my next steps.”
Pegula praised Raducanu’s effort, saying, “She played really well, especially in the second set. I knew I had to come out strong in the third set and take control quickly.”
Pegula will now play 19-year-old Alexandra Eala in the semi-finals. Eala surprised everyone by defeating world No. 2 Iga Swiatek 6-2, 7-5 in the quarter-finals.
