The San Francisco 49ers have made a shocking move, trading star wide receiver Deebo Samuel to the Washington Commanders. The trade, which was finalized earlier today, sends Samuel to the nation’s capital in exchange for a fifth-round pick in the upcoming NFL draft.
The move comes as a surprise to many, as Samuel has been a key contributor to the 49ers’ offense over the past few seasons. A versatile player who can line up at both wide receiver and running back, Samuel has been a favorite target of quarterback Brock Purdy. In 2022, he hauled in 66 catches for 1,133 yards and 8 touchdowns, while also rushing for 273 yards and 3 scores on the ground.
Despite his impressive production, the 49ers apparently felt that Samuel’s contract demands were too steep. The 27-year-old receiver is entering the final year of his rookie deal, and was reportedly seeking a lucrative extension. By trading him to the Commanders, the 49ers avoid having to pay Samuel’s expected asking price, which was rumored to be in the range of $25 million per year.
The Commanders, meanwhile, are getting a dynamic playmaker who should immediately upgrade their receiving corps. Samuel joins a Washington offense that already features quarterback Sam Howell and running back Antonio Gibson. With Samuel on board, the Commanders are hoping to make a push for the playoffs in 2025.
