Cam Ward Calls Out Cowboys While Discussing How to Beat NFL Defenses Ahead of Draft
As the 2024 NFL Draft approaches, Washington State quarterback Cam Ward isn’t shying away from speaking his mind. In a recent interview, Ward discussed how young quarterbacks can succeed at the next level, particularly when facing elite NFL defenses. In doing so, he singled out the Dallas Cowboys as a team whose defense can be exploited with the right approach.
Ward, projected as a mid-to-late first-round pick, has gained attention for his strong arm and playmaking ability. When asked about the challenges of facing NFL defenses, he emphasized the importance of quick decision-making, pocket awareness, and film study. However, his comments took a sharp turn when he mentioned Dallas.
“The Cowboys have a great defense, no doubt,” Ward admitted. “But when you look at how teams have beaten them, it’s about exploiting their aggressiveness. They love to bring pressure, and they rely on their corners to make plays. If you can stay poised and get the ball out quickly, you can make plays against them.”
Ward’s statement isn’t entirely off-base. The Cowboys, led by defensive coordinator Dan Quinn, have built an identity around speed and pressure. With stars like Micah Parsons leading the pass rush and Trevon Diggs patrolling the secondary, their defense thrives on forcing turnovers and disrupting opposing quarterbacks. However, teams that have neutralized their blitz packages and targeted their secondary in one-on-one matchups have found success.
Ward pointed to film study as the key to beating high-level defenses. “It’s all about understanding tendencies,” he explained. “You have to recognize when a defense is trying to disguise coverage and when they’re bringing extra rushers. If you can anticipate what’s coming, you can attack the weaknesses they leave open.”
His comments may raise eyebrows among Cowboys fans, especially given the team’s aspirations to contend for a Super Bowl. However, Ward’s confidence is part of what makes him an intriguing prospect. His ability to read defenses and execute under pressure will be crucial to his success at the next level.
While it’s unclear where Ward will land in the draft, his bold take on Dallas’s defense showcases his competitive mindset. Whether he gets the chance to face the Cowboys early in his NFL career remains to be seen, but his comments have already added intrigue to his journey to the league.
