As of early March 2025, South Carolina head coach Dawn Staley addressed speculation about star point guard Raven Johnson’s future with the Gamecocks, amid rumors that Johnson may consider entering the transfer portal or exploring other opportunities. During a recent press conference following South Carolina’s dominant run through the SEC regular season, Staley expressed confidence in Johnson’s commitment to the program but acknowledged that any final decision will rest with the player after the season concludes.
“Raven loves it here. She’s grown a lot this year, and I think she’s found her voice as a leader on this team,” Staley said. “But like any player, she’ll evaluate her options once the season is over, and we’ll support her no matter what.”
Johnson, a redshirt junior, has been instrumental in leading the undefeated Gamecocks through one of the most challenging schedules in the country. Known for her defense, court vision, and improved scoring ability, she has become a key component of South Carolina’s national championship aspirations. This season, Johnson has averaged around 8 points, 6 assists, and 3 rebounds per game, along with standout perimeter defense. With such performances, there has been growing speculation about her future, whether that’s staying at South Carolina, entering the WNBA Draft, or considering another school for her final season of eligibility.
When asked directly if she expected Johnson to return, Staley remained measured. “I hope so. She’s a Gamecock through and through, and we’re building something really special. But as with all our players, we want what’s best for them, whether that’s staying here or pursuing new opportunities.”
Staley also hinted that the culture at South Carolina, combined with the close bond among the players, may play a role in Johnson’s decision. “This group is tight. I think that matters. They’ve been through a lot together, and they want to finish what they started.”
For now, Johnson has made no public comment about her future, choosing instead to focus on helping South Carolina chase another national title. The expectation is that any formal decision from Johnson regarding her return will likely come after the NCAA Tournament concludes.
