The Florida Gators women’s basketball team dominated the Texas A&M Aggies 74-52, extending the Aggies’ seven-game losing streak. The Gators’ 21-0 run in the second quarter sealed the win, and they never looked back.
Florida’s victory was a testament to their strong team defense, which held the Aggies to just 30% shooting from the field. The Gators also outrebounded Texas A&M 43-30, with senior forward Faith Dut scoring a game-high 12 points and grabbing 7 rebounds.
The Gators’ offense was led by sophomore guard Nina Rickards, who scored 11 points and dished out 5 assists. Freshman forward Tatyana Wyche added 10 points and 6 rebounds, and junior guard Lavender Briggs chipped in with 9 points and 4 assists.
Texas A&M’s leading scorer, senior guard Kayla Wells, was held to just 8 points on 3-12 shooting from the field. The Aggies’ struggles on offense were compounded by their poor shooting from beyond the arc, where they made just 2 of 15 attempts.
The Gators’ win was their second in a row, and it improved their overall record to 14-13. They are now 5-8 in the Southeastern Conference, and they will look to build on their momentum when they host the No. 15 Tennessee Volunteers on Sunday.
Florida’s head coach, Kelly Rae Finley, was pleased with her team’s performance, particularly on defense. “I thought our defense was outstanding tonight,” Finley said. “We were able to shut down their top scorers and limit their opportunities. Our players were very focused and executed the game plan to perfection.”
Finley also praised her team’s rebounding effort, which was a key factor in their win. “We knew that rebounding was going to be a big key in this game, and our players did a great job of securing the boards and limiting their second-chance opportunities.”
The Gators’ win over Texas A&M was a significant one, as it marked their first victory over the Aggies since 2018. It also gave them a much-needed boost of confidence as they head into the final stretch of the regular season.
