Manchester United’s decision to hand Marcus Rashford a lucrative new contract has come under heavy scrutiny, especially now with his move to Aston Villa less than two years later. The 27-year-old forward earned a £300,000-a-week deal until 2028 following his career-best 2022/23 season under Erik ten Hag, during which he scored an impressive 30 goals across all competitions.
However, Rashford struggled to replicate that form, managing just eight goals the following season and only seven more before his February switch to Aston Villa. His 12-game absence from the squad prior to his departure highlighted a breakdown in his relationship with the club after nearly a decade as one of United’s star players.
With a permanent exit from Old Trafford expected this summer, Aston Villa hold a £40 million option to make his stay in the Midlands permanent, should Rashford choose to continue his career there.
