But in a candid moment, Reds midfielder Alexis Mac Allister shared who he would personally sign in a heartbeat – and the name might surprise you.
No Striker, No Winger – Just ‘Cuti’
When asked which of his Argentina national team-mates he’d love to join him at Liverpool, Mac Allister didn’t name a forward or midfielder. His pick? Cristian ‘Cuti’ Romero, Tottenham Hotspur’s commanding centre-back.
“Oh, Cuti. He’s a player I love,” Mac Allister said without hesitation.
Romero, a World Cup winner alongside Mac Allister in Qatar 2022, has clearly left a lasting impression. Despite being on the books of a Premier League rival, the admiration is strong.
“The way he speaks and plays, sometimes you feel like he’s too much because he makes everything so easy.
“He gives me confidence. For me, he’s been the best centre-back in the world for several years,” Mac Allister added.
Liverpool’s Defensive Picture
While Liverpool’s defense has seen some restructuring, especially following Trent Alexander-Arnold’s departure to Real Madrid, Mac Allister’s words raise an interesting point: the Reds might not be done reinforcing at the back.
Despite already recruiting Giorgi Mamardashvili and Jeremie Frimpong, there’s buzz around a potential late move for a centre-back. The club was previously linked to Dean Huijsen from Bournemouth, though he ultimately joined Real Madrid.
Could Romero be a future target?
It seems unlikely in the short term given his key role at Spurs, especially after helping them win the Europa League final against Manchester United. Even so, the notion underscores a broader truth: Liverpool’s squad rebuild might still need a defensive cornerstone.
