Giorgi Mamardashvili – 4

The Georgian goalkeeper had a shaky night and will be disappointed with his positioning on John McGinn’s late strike. Although he made a couple of important saves earlier, he was too often exposed by the chaos in front of him.
Joe Gomez – 3

Villa repeatedly targeted the right side and Gomez struggled to cope with the pace and movement. He was caught out of position far too often and offered little going forward.

Ibrahima Konate – 4

Konate tried to play some progressive passes but was frequently caught on the wrong side as Villa attacked with numbers. His lack of communication with those around him was evident throughout.
Virgil van Dijk – 8

The captain was Liverpool’s standout performer and scored two well-taken headers to keep his side in the contest. He led by example at the back for long periods but could not prevent the collapse around him.
Milos Kerkez – 5

The Hungarian was one of the brighter performers on the left and showed good hunger to win the ball back. However, he was unable to stem the flow of attacks coming down his side in the second half.
Curtis Jones – 4

Jones tried to push Liverpool forward in the first half but faded badly after the break. He was overrun in midfield and offered very little protection to the defence.
Alexis Mac Allister – 4

The Argentine started brightly but his decision-making deteriorated as the game went on. He was guilty of losing possession in dangerous areas and failed to impose himself when Liverpool needed him most.

Ryan Gravenberch – 4

Gravenberch was too easily brushed off the ball by Villa’s midfielders and struggled to influence the game. His early strike that led to Gakpo’s offside goal was one of his few bright moments.
Dominik Szoboszlai – 6

The Hungarian delivered the free-kick for Van Dijk’s first goal and showed flashes of quality. However, his slip from the throw-in directly led to Villa’s second goal and proved costly.
Rio Ngumoha – 7

The young attacker was a bright spark in the first half and came very close to scoring when his long-range effort hit the post. He faded after the break but showed real promise on a difficult night.
Cody Gakpo – 3

The Dutch forward endured another frustrating afternoon, missing a glaring opportunity from the rebound off the post. He offered very little movement or threat and was often caught offside.
