Ryan Gravenberch Angers Liverpool Fans With Comments After 1-1 Draw vs Chelsea

Ryan Gravenberch has angered Liverpoolfans with his comments following the Premier League champions’ 1-1 draw with Chelsea on Saturday afternoon. The Reds looked set for a plain-sailing weekend after taking the lead inside six minutes, but the visitors – who had lost each of their previous six matches and were being led by a caretaker manager – equalised half an hour later.

With Liverpool struggling to regain control from there, it seemed only a matter of time before Arne Slot turned to British transfer-record signing Alexander Isak from the bench in the second half. That’s when the boos at Anfield first began, with Slot jeered for his decision to take off Rio Ngumoha instead of Cody Gakpo.

As the full-time whistle blew, more booing could be heard, summing up the usually faithful home crowd’s feelings towards Slot and his future at the club. Gravenberch has now responded to that negativity, much to the disagreement of Liverpool supporters.

Gravenberch, who has developed into one of the world’s best midfielders under Slot’s supervision, is the latest to highlight that divide with his post-match comments this weekend. He follows in the footsteps of Dominik Szoboszlai, who has faced similar criticism in the past. Responding to the boos, he said:

“To be honest, we need them behind us. We didn’t win, but I think we don’t really deserve this, you know. Fans have to be behind us for 90 mins. When they were behind us in the second half we pressed so we needed. Hopefully the next few games they won’t do this anymore.”

Criticism for the Dutchman has come thick and fast on social media, as one X user remarked: “Talking about their ‘time off’ after a defeat to United, telling the fans they don’t deserve to be booed. This is by a mile the most disconnected I’ve ever been from a Liverpool squad. Almost all of them could leave, and I wouldn’t care less,” as another put simply: “Sorry Ryan, but shut up please.”

A second added: “Earning 250k a week and you expect me to be hailing you for that rubbish you play.,” a third continued: “Stop telling the fans what to do or how to think.” Elsewhere, another concluded: “I’m sorry I like Gravenberch, but he’s talking absolute b******s there.

“None of them press apart from Szoboszlai. The rest of them are lazy b******s. If you’re watching a team half-arse it like we consistently do… you can voice your opinion.”

Arne Slot’s Comments on FT Reaction

Under-fire Liverpool boss Slot also issued a response to the booing he received at the weekend. “That’s probably got something to do with us not winning,” he begun, seemingly pointing out the obvious.

“A draw. In the last five games, we won three, lost one, and today a draw. That’s not what we want. We want more, and we want to win all five. Last week we had a negative set piece balance, today again.”

He added: “It completely makes sense people are disappointed if Liverpool don’t win because that’s what we want. This is how it should be if we don’t win.”
