Jamie Carragher Called Out For Comments About Rio Ngumoha During Man Utd vs Liverpool

After surrendering a two-goal lead, Manchester United managed to spare themselves the embarrassment and beat Liverpool 3-2 at Old Trafford, securing a place in next season’s Champions Leaguein the process.

Matheus Cunha opened the scoring in the opening minutes before Benjamin Sesko’s controversial goal had United two goals ahead after just 14 minutes.

Liverpool fought back to level the score through Dominik Szoboszlai and Cody Gakpo, but the decisive moment came when Alexis Mac Allister’s sliced clearance fell straight to Kobbie Mainoo, who fired into the bottom corner to seal a vital win for the hosts.

In the immediate aftermath, the conversation was dominated not by the result itself but by Jamie Carragher’sanalysis of it, which left a significant portion of Liverpool’s fan base furious.

Speaking on Sky Sports after the final whistle, Carragher directed much of his criticism at 18-year-old substitute Rio Ngumoha for his role in the winning goal, rather than Milos Kerkez, whose loose marking saw him lose out on a header to Amad Diallo, which led directly to Mac Allister’s botched clearance, which fell straight to Mainoo.

“You talk about the impact of Amad coming on and making a mistake. Young Rio Ngumoha has to do a lot better,” Carragher said. “When you make those substitutions, they have to be alive when they come on.

“He missed a challenge with Dorgu initially, and I was watching him. I knew Shaw was on the outside of him and he just switched off. Small details make a huge difference at this level of football.

“He’s a young man and he will certainly learn from it.”

The comments weren’t without some merit. Ngumoha’s awareness in the build-up to the goal was certainly questionable. But for many Liverpool fans watching, the decision to blame a teenager while avoiding any criticism of Mac Allister’s role in the goal seemed rather targeted, and they were quick to say so.

X wasn’t short of opinions in the minutes that followed. The overriding theme was frustration that Carragher, a Liverpool legend and one of the most prominent football pundits, had appeared to shield his former club’s more senior and established players, while directing the blame towards a young substitute.

One fuming Liverpool supporter said: “Carragher quick to slag off 18-year-old Ngumoha, but silent on Macallister and Kerkez on that involvement off that goal. I wonder why.”

Another stated: “Carragher digging out Ngumoha is embarrassing,” while one supporter questioned his silence on Mac Allister’s contribution: “How does Carragher blame Rio there? It is Mac Allister at fault for simply not clearing the ball.”

“Carragher singling out Ngumoha for that goal is disgraceful, man. Kerkez and Mac Allister are far more at fault for that,” another posted.

Whether the criticism of Carragher is entirely fair is debatable; pundits are expected to analyse all aspects of a goal, and Ngumoha’s positioning was a legitimate point to raise. But the perception that a Liverpool icon had gone out of his way to protect a Liverpool player at the expense of a teenager was always going to land badly, and on this occasion, the court of public opinion delivered its verdict quickly.
