With slightly over a year remaining on Arne Slot’s deal at Anfield, a judgment on whether to extend or sever ties with the Dutchman will need to be reached in the near future. Before his arrival in 2024, former Reds player Xabi Alonso was understood to be Liverpool’s principal candidate to succeed Klopp but turned down the club to remain at Bayer Leverkusen.

Following merely seven months at Real Madrid, the Spaniard departed the club in January and has stayed without work, purportedly choosing to hold off until the summer before deciding on his next role. According to TEAMtalk, the Reds owners, Fenway Sports Group (FSG) have identified Alonso as the “only name” they desire as the club’s head coach this summer.

The report also suggests that the dramatic downturn from last season’s title-winning campaign has concerned senior figures. It stated that whilst the club are not currently planning to replace Slot, the Dutchman understands that an account of this season’s decline will be required once the present campaign concludes.

Jurgen Klopp has displayed no indication of wanting to resume the daily grind of football management but that hasn’t prevented reports connecting him with a remarkable switch to Atletico Madrid. Presently the global head of soccer at the Red Bull franchise, claims regarding his satisfaction with his position – which were dismissed by Red Bull – sparked controversy.

Amidst suggestions of his unhappiness, Spanish television programme El Chiringuito reported that the German is in advanced discussions about replacing Diego Simeone – who is in the final year of his contract. They assert that Klopp, 58, is in negotiations with Mark Rowan, who serves as CEO of Atletico majority shareholders, Apollo.

Oliver Mintzlaff, CEO of corporate projects and investments at Red Bull, emphatically rejected the reports as he stated: “This is total nonsense and completely unfounded. On the contrary, we are extremely satisfied with Jurgen Klopp’s work. We are convinced that he is the right man for this job. That’s where we are putting our full focus and our energy.”
