Speaking after Liverpool’s 2-1 defeat to Brighton, Virgil van Dijk admitted that Hugo Ekitike’s early injury was a serious blow to their game plan.
“When Hugo comes off and you look at the team, there was not a lot of runs in behind,” said the Liverpool captain.
“There is not a lot on that side. That wasn’t the issue why we lost but it changed a bit of our game.
“When he made changes, the formation changed and the positions changed and then you’re asking different things.”
Ekitike barely lasted seven minutes on the pitch, struggling with an injury for a while before being subbed off.
Arne Slot went on to reveal that the striker avoided a serious injury, and he might even travel for international duty.
