On another night, though, the scoreline could have been far more embarrassing for Arne Slot’s side, who looked disjointed and sluggish across the pitch. Alisson was once again a hero with several crucial saves, but after going down injured, he was forced to make way for Giorgi Mamardashvili in the second half.
Liverpool must now focus on the bigger picture before their trip to Chelsea this weekend: they remain top of the Premier League, have won seven of nine matches in all competitions, and still have plenty of time to gel as a team. But to compound their misery, Galatasaray twisted the knife with a mocking post on social media.

Galatasaray’s English Twitter account was quick to rub salt into the wounds of the Liverpool supporters who were convinced they had just seen their side’s worst performance since their new manager succeeded Jurgen Klopp last summer. Following full-time, the club wrote (see the full post below):

Before the match, Galatasaray showed plenty of grace, unveiling tifos and banners paying tribute to Diogo Jota, alongside political messages in support of Palestine. But once the whistle blew, Okan Buruk’s side proved as uncompromising as any team Liverpool will face this season, embracing an ethos of winning by any means necessary.
The Reds should have expected mockery after falling to a side that hadn’t won in their previous seven Champions League fixtures. Still, Galatasaray had spent much of the summer preparing to carry the underdog mantle in this year’s competition.
Like Liverpool, they were among the biggest spenders – breaking the Turkish transfer record to sign former Napoli striker Victor Osimhen. Secured permanently for £65.5 million, he stepped up to convert the penalty that condemned Slot’s side to defeat in midweek.
