Liverpool’s Champions League Dream Ends in Penalty Shootout Against PSG
Liverpool started the year strong in the Champions League, but by mid-March, their journey was over. Paris St-Germain (PSG) knocked them out in a penalty shootout at Anfield. Unfortunately for Liverpool, they missed key penalties, which cost them the game.
After a thrilling 120 minutes of football, where Ousmane Dembélé scored to level the match, PSG won the coin toss and chose to take penalties at the Anfield Road end, away from the famous Kop stand. The shootout became a test of nerves. In the end, Liverpool’s Darwin Núñez and Curtis Jones saw their penalties saved by PSG’s goalkeeper, Gianluigi Donnarumma—the same man who frustrated England in the Euro 2020 final.
Liverpool had been one of the strongest teams in Europe during the autumn and winter, but they couldn’t get past the last 16. Despite leading the Premier League, they couldn’t overcome PSG, who also dominate the French league.
The match was intense, with PSG testing Liverpool’s defense, especially in the first half. In the second half, Liverpool fought back hard but couldn’t find the winning goal. They played with high pressure, often sending several players forward, but this left space at the back for PSG to counterattack.
PSG’s attack was outstanding, with fast and skillful players like Bradley Barcola and Dembélé. Only a defender of Virgil van Dijk’s level could handle them. On the left, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia faced off against Trent Alexander-Arnold in an exciting battle. However, Liverpool suffered injuries, as Ibrahima Konaté limped off in extra time.
PSG’s goal came early, in the 12th minute. Dembélé played a pass through to Barcola, who cut inside and sent the ball toward the goal. Dembélé then ran past Liverpool’s defenders and tapped it into the net after a small mistake by Konaté.
Liverpool played better in the second half, putting PSG under pressure, but they couldn’t find a goal. The match went to extra time, and PSG held on to force a penalty shootout, where they emerged victorious.
To make matters worse for Liverpool, they now face a defensive crisis ahead of their Carabao Cup final against Newcastle. Both Trent Alexander-Arnold and Ibrahima Konaté were injured during the game, making their upcoming match even more challenging.
