‘He was probably tired when he said that’: Fans react to Robertson’s ‘players are never to blame’ claim amid Man City charges

Andy Robertson has found himself at the centre of a fan debate after insisting Manchester City’s players should not be blamed following the club’s reported verdict in the Premier League’s financial case.

City were reportedly found guilty of 114 of the 115 charges brought against them, with the club expected to appeal. The sanctions have not yet been decided, and City have consistently denied wrongdoing.

Robertson, who spent nine years at Liverpool battling Guardiola’s side for major honours, was asked about the verdict while on international duty with Scotland.

“For me, the [Man City] players showed they were good enough on the pitch. I don’t know too much about the charges and stuff like that. But they had an incredible team, one that I loved battling against. I don’t think when it comes to these things that players are ever to blame. That’s all I can focus on.”
His comments quickly drew criticism from fans who argued that the players could not be completely separated from the circumstances surrounding the squad’s construction.

@markbruford: “They bought “those” players by cheating, Andy. Not that hard to understand 🤦‍♂️”
@Troytheiggest: “We don’t blame the players… or supporters. We blame the club. The club created this mess by CHEATING!”
