“Miami is definitely a school I could see myself at,” Barney said. “The history they have, especially with defensive backs, speaks for itself. They’ve produced some of the best to ever play the game, and they’ve been telling me how I could be the next in line.”
At 6-foot-1 and around 175 pounds, Barney possesses the size that college programs covet at the cornerback position. His ability to play press coverage, run with top receivers, and create turnovers makes him a natural fit in Miami’s defensive system under head coach Mario Cristobal and defensive coordinator Lance Guidry.
“I like the scheme they run,” Barney said. “They’re aggressive. They like to let their corners play man, and that’s my style. I want to be on an island, going up against the best, and I feel like Miami gives me that opportunity.”
Barney has been building a strong relationship with Miami’s coaching staff, particularly with cornerbacks coach Chevis Jackson. The two have had regular conversations about Barney’s game, his fit in the Hurricanes’ defense, and how Miami could help him develop on and off the field.
“Coach Jackson is real,” Barney said. “He’s been showing me how they’d use me in their defense and how they’d develop me to get to the next level. It’s not just talk with them. They’ve broken down my film, told me what I do well, and what I can keep improving on. That means a lot.”
Barney made his way to Coral Gables for a visit and came away impressed with the entire experience. From the facilities to the campus atmosphere, the trip gave him an inside look at what life would be like as a Hurricane.
“It felt like home,” Barney said. “The energy down there is different. You can tell the program is headed in the right direction with Coach Cristobal. Everyone is locked in on winning championships.”
As Barney’s recruitment continues to heat up, Miami is making sure to stay near the top of his list. While he still plans on taking more visits and evaluating all his options, the Hurricanes have positioned themselves as a serious contender.
“Miami is going to be there until the end,” Barney said. “They’ve shown me a lot of love, and I can really picture myself playing there. We’ll see how everything plays out, but they’re definitely one of the schools I’m watching closely.”
For Miami, landing a prospect like Dorian Barney would be another statement on the recruiting trail, especially as they continue to stack elite talent in the secondary.
