Former Liverpool striker Peter Crouch has identified a recurring issue in Mohamed Salah’s recent performances, suggesting that even the club’s star forward has contributed to the team’s early-season frustrations.
Speaking on his latest football analysis segment, Crouch said that while Salah remains one of the Premier League’s most dangerous attackers, he has at times been guilty of holding onto the ball too long during key moments of play.
“It’s a real frustration for all Liverpool fans,” Crouch said. “Salah is guilty of trying to do a bit too much on his own at times. You can see he wants to make something happen, but occasionally that leads to attacks slowing down or opportunities being missed.”
Crouch, who scored more than 40 goals for Liverpool between 2005 and 2008, emphasised that Salah’s intentions come from a positive place — particularly at a time when the team is struggling to maintain rhythm and consistency in the final third. However, he believes the Egyptian’s desire to turn games around single-handedly has sometimes worked against Liverpool’s fluid attacking style.
“When things aren’t going well collectively, top players often feel they have to take on more responsibility,” Crouch added. “Salah clearly wants to drag the team forward, but Liverpool are at their best when the front line is moving, rotating, and combining quickly. He’s at his most dangerous when he’s part of that flow, not trying to do everything himself.”
Liverpool’s attacking play has come under scrutiny in recent weeks, with supporters noting a lack of sharpness and cohesion compared to previous seasons. Analysts have pointed to disruptions in midfield, injuries, and changes in personnel as contributing factors, leaving forwards — including Salah — with fewer clear chances.
Despite his critique, Crouch reiterated his admiration for Salah, insisting that the forward’s work rate, goal record, and competitive mentality make him indispensable to Jürgen Klopp’s side.
“He’s a world-class player and still Liverpool’s biggest threat,” Crouch said. “This isn’t a major criticism — it’s just something that, if he adjusts slightly, could help the whole team click again.”
With Liverpool seeking to regain momentum, the spotlight remains firmly on Salah to rediscover the blend of individual brilliance and team synergy that has defined his time at Anfield.
