Kelly, originally from Michigan, became a fan favorite during his time at Tennessee thanks to his hard-nosed running style and leadership on and off the field. In his junior season with the Vols, Kelly rushed for 778 yards and nine touchdowns, adding another 37 catches for 299 yards through the air. After declaring early for the NFL Draft in 2018, Kelly was selected by the Los Angeles Rams in the sixth round. He spent several seasons with the Rams and later the Cleveland Browns, primarily contributing as a depth option and on special teams.
Now, Kelly is bringing his playing experience to the sidelines, hoping to help guide the next generation of athletes. According to Oak Ridge head coach Derrick Rang, the addition of Kelly to the staff is a major win for the program. Rang praised Kelly’s knowledge of the game, work ethic, and ability to connect with young players. “Having someone with John’s background and experience is invaluable for our kids,” Rang said. “He knows what it takes to play at the highest level, and he has the heart to teach these guys how to improve every day.”
Kelly is expected to work closely with the team’s running backs and assist in overall offensive development. Oak Ridge, a program with a rich football tradition and multiple state titles, hopes Kelly’s insight can help them return to championship contention. Kelly himself expressed his excitement to be back in Tennessee, this time contributing in a different role. In a brief statement to local media, Kelly shared his gratitude for the opportunity. “Tennessee has always felt like home to me,” Kelly said. “I’m excited to be here helping young players grow, both on the field and as people. Football has given me so much, and now it’s time for me to give back.”
The Wildcats are currently preparing for spring workouts, and Kelly has already begun working with players in offseason training sessions. Early reports from the team indicate his presence is already making a difference, with players responding well to his coaching style and attention to detail. His experience in high-level systems, both in college and the pros, is expected to bring fresh ideas and techniques to Oak Ridge’s offensive schemes.
As the new season approaches, all eyes will be on how Kelly’s impact translates onto the field. For now, the community is welcoming back a familiar face who is ready to invest in the future of Tennessee football.
