Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has left fans completely confused after a controversial moment early in the Champions League clash with PSV.

On Wednesday evening, Liverpool look to bounce back from a dismal 3-0 home loss to Nottingham Forest as they host Dutch side PSV in a Champions League match.

The fixture comes as the Reds face increasing pressure given their performances throughout the season so far, leaving them 12th in the Premier League table.

However, things didn’t get off to a great start as Van Dijk was involved in a controversial moment that has truly left fans at a loss for words.

Despite being a key part of Liverpool’s success in recent years, it was Van Dijk that made a major error just minutes into the Champions League clash.

While defending a cross into Liverpool’s box, Van Dijk raised his arm towards referee Alejandro Hernandez as he felt that he had been fouled as his shirt was being pulled.

But while protesting the foul, the ball struck the Dutchman’s outstretched hand, leading the referee to give a penalty to the visitors within the opening five minutes.

Former Spurs defender Ivan Perisic then stepped up to put PSV Eindhoven ahead in the clash.

Reacting to the moment, one fan wrote on X: “That was the dumbest ever penalty to concede. Virgil Van Dijk what are we doing here.”

While another claimed: “Van Dijk throwing the game within 5 minutes.”

Thankfully for Liverpool fans, their side wasn’t behind for long as just 11 minute later Dominik Szoboszlai scored an equaliser after a Cody Gakpo shot on target was deflected by PSV keeper Matej Kovar, only to be tapped in by the Hungarian.
