Ohio State is preparing for a transition at the quarterback position following Will Howard’s departure to the NFL. Howard, who transferred from Kansas State in 2024, led the Buckeyes to a national championship victory over Notre Dame and was named the Offensive MVP of the College Football Playoff National Championship.
In his absence, redshirt freshman Julian Sayin is anticipated to take over as the starting quarterback. Sayin, a former top prospect, transferred from Alabama and has been with the Buckeyes since the previous season. His potential elevation to the starting role is bolstered by his strong performance in practice and familiarity with Ohio State’s offensive system.
The Buckeyes’ quarterback depth has been further impacted by the transfer of backup quarterback Devin Brown to California (Cal). Brown, who played in 15 games for Ohio State, entered the NCAA transfer portal but remained with the team through their championship run before announcing his move to Cal, where he seeks a starting position.
To strengthen their quarterback roster, Ohio State has signed five-star recruit Tavien St. Clair. St. Clair’s arrival adds depth and competition to the quarterback room, providing the Buckeyes with additional options as they navigate the upcoming season.
