Virgil van Dijk hints at Netherlands retirement after 2026 World Cup

Virgil van Dijk appears to have hinted that the 2026 World Cup will be his last outing with the Dutch national team.

Speaking to his teammates in the dressing room after the Netherlands clinched a place at the World Cup, the Liverpool captain said: “I obviously want to thank everyone who’s here, all the players, the staff and all the people who make sure everything runs smoothly behind the scenes.

“I’m proud to be the captain of Oranje and to lead you every single time. I’m already excited for the final tournament and to achieve success together.”

The 34-year-old is still irreplaceable both for club and country, and he could still have a few good seasons in him at the top level, but focusing on his club career might prolong it even further.
