English football’s governing bodies have agreed to stop holding minutes of silence for global disasters or unrelated world events, marking a major shift in how the game responds to international issues, according to The Times.
The Football Association, Premier League, and EFL have jointly formed a new World Events Working Group (WEWG) to oversee English football’s reaction to major world developments. The move comes after growing concern that such tributes have become too frequent and risk losing their impact.
Under the new guidelines, moments of silence or illuminated tributes will only take place when there is a direct football connection to the event being marked.
The FA has also confirmed that Wembley Stadium’s iconic arch will now only be lit up for football or entertainment-related occasions, rather than for global or social causes.
