Alyssa Thomas has broken her silence on her fiancée, DeWanna Bonner, signing with the Indiana Fever, where she will join rookie sensation Caitlin Clark. In a recent interview, the Connecticut Sun star made it clear that Bonner’s decision was entirely her own.
“Her decision was her decision,” Thomas said. “At the end of the day, she had to do what was best for her, and I support her no matter what.”
Bonner, a five-time WNBA All-Star and one of the league’s most respected veterans, shocked many when she chose to leave the Sun after four seasons. She ultimately signed a two-year deal with the Fever, a young team that has quickly become one of the most talked-about franchises following their selection of Clark with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft.
For Thomas, watching her longtime teammate and fiancée leave Connecticut is bittersweet. The two have played together since 2020, developing a chemistry that has made the Sun a consistent playoff contender. Losing Bonner’s veteran leadership and scoring ability will be a challenge for the Sun, but Thomas understands that, at this stage of her career, Bonner had to make a move she felt was best.
“Of course, I wanted her to stay,” Thomas admitted. “We’ve built something special in Connecticut. But at the end of the day, this is her journey, and I respect that.”
Bonner’s move to Indiana is particularly intriguing because of the Fever’s new trajectory with Clark. The former Iowa star is expected to transform the franchise, and having an experienced player like Bonner by her side will only help. The Fever also boast a young core, including Aliyah Boston and NaLyssa Smith, making them a team to watch in the coming seasons.
Thomas, a fierce competitor, will now have to face Bonner as an opponent rather than a teammate. When asked about the prospect of playing against her fiancée, she smiled and kept it simple.
“It’s going to be weird, but once we’re on the court, it’s all business,” Thomas said. “We both want to win.”
As Thomas prepares for another season leading the Sun, she does so knowing that her fiancée is forging a new path. While they may be on different teams now, their bond remains strong—just with a little extra competitive edge when they meet on the hardwood.
