Steven Gerrard is a Liverpool man through-and-through as one of the club’s greatest players of all time. However, the Englishman has revealed he does indeed have a ‘second team’ in the Premier League, who he’d like to see lift the trophy.
He was delighted to see the Merseysiders win the biggest prize in English football under both Jurgen Klopp (2019/20) and Arne Slot (2024/25) in recent years. Liverpool won’t be repeating that feat this season after a significant fall off in form.
In a world where the Reds can’t win the English top-flight, Gerrard has an obvious candidate he’d want to see lift the trophy. It’s a club that has never won the Premier League, and not one many would assume Gerrard has an affinity for.
Steven Gerrard Reveals His Second Team in the Premier League
In a TNT Sports interview at Anfield, Gerrard walked through his favourite memories and toughest opponents he ever came up against at the iconic stadium. One of the stops along the way was the away dressing room.
Having never visited as an opposition player, Gerrard quickly joked: “I’m surprised I’m welcome in here, to be honest.” What came next will have taken everyone by surprise as the 44-year-old made an honest admission.
The interview took place before Liverpool’s Premier League match against Newcastle United in January, meaning the Magpies’ players’ kits were lying out in the changing room. Gerrard admitted that they would be his pick to win the Premier League if his beloved Liverpool couldn’t, as he said:
“It’s quite fitting, actually, that we’re in the Newcastle dressing room because, outside of Liverpool, if I wanted anyone to win the league, it would be Newcastle.
“They’re my number two team in the Premier League. I’ve never, ever said that [before], but there you go. That’s live for you.”
The closest the Geordies have ever come to lifting the Premier League trophy came in back-to-back second-place finishes in the 1995-96 and 1996-97 seasons. They did win the First Division four times in the early 1900s, with the most recent coming in 1927.
Gerrard Thinks Liverpool Should’ve Signed Newcastle Star
There was lots of talk about boyhood Liverpool supporter Anthony Gordonjoining the Reds in the summer of 2024. While a deal never transpired, Gerrard still believes the England international would’ve been a good addition to the squad.
Current left-wing starter Cody Gakpo has come under intense scrutiny after a string of poor performances this term. Speaking in December, a month before Gordon netted in the Anfield clash, Gerrard insisted (per Geordie Boot Boys):
“I think that’s [signing a winger] where they need to do a bit in January, the balance of the squad, the recruitment team at Liverpool are unbelievable by the way.
“The recruitment team is top, but the squad is imbalanced, losing Diaz, not getting someone to come in. I know they were linked with Anthony Gordon, there’s a lot of pressure on Gakpo to deliver, there isn’t an ideal replacement.”
