Taking the Micky

Tottenham centre-back Micky van de Ven may not be a good fit for Liverpool – he lacks a ‘football brain’.

That’s the view of ex-Reds striker Dean Saunders, who has had his say on the Dutch defender following his red card against Crystal Palace last week.

talkSPORT reported in January how Spurs value the 24-year-old at £100million amid interest from Liverpool.

Speaking of the player on the Sports Breakfast show, Saunders said: “For me, there’s two types of centre-halves, there’s anticipators and reactors.

“Alan Hansen would anticipate where the ball was going and never get his shorts dirty, he’d just get there.

“Van der Ven, if you notice, is always slide tackling, which is, for me, you look at it and think, ‘Why have you not read that and got there earlier?’

“He’s lightning quick though, he gets himself out of trouble.

“So, whether his football brain develops enough to play for Liverpool, we’ll wait and see.”
