Liverpool suffer Alisson injury blow ahead of Galatasaray Champions League clash

Liverpool will be without goalkeeper Alisson Becker for the first leg of their UEFA Champions League round-of-16 tie against Galatasaray after the Brazilian suffered an injury in training.

The 32-year-old, who has made 32 appearances in all competitions this season, felt discomfort at the end of Monday’s training session and will not travel with the squad to Istanbul.

His absence means summer signing Giorgi Mamardashvili is expected to start in goal for Arne Slot’s side, with Freddie Woodman stepping up as the backup goalkeeper.

Liverpool confirmed a 21-man squad for the trip, including players such as Virgil van Dijk, Mohamed Salah, Florian Wirtz and Dominik Szoboszlai.

Mamardashvili has already stepped in for Alisson several times this season and previously explained his patient approach to waiting for opportunities.

Forward Federico Chiesa is also missing from the travelling squad after being unable to take part in Monday’s training session.
