Former Liverpool forward Andy Carroll is facing the possibility of a custodial sentence after being charged with breaching a non-molestation order. Telegraph Sport reports that the 36-year-old is due to appear at Chelmsford Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, following an arrest in April connected to an alleged incident in March.
Essex Police confirmed the charge, stating: “Andrew Carroll, 36, of Epping, was arrested on April 27 and the alleged offence relates to an incident in March.”
Specific details of the alleged breach cannot be disclosed for legal reasons, but a conviction could carry a prison sentence of up to five years.
The Liverpool transfer that defined a career
Carroll’s name remains closely linked to one of the most remarkable moments in Liverpool’s recent transfer history.
In January 2011, the Gateshead-born striker completed a £35 million move from Newcastle United, making him the most expensive British player ever at the time.
He later revealed that he had privately hoped the deal would fall through, admitting he “remembered hoping to fail my medical” after being rushed through the process without fully grasping what was happening.
