Liverpool are reportedly considering a return for club legend Steven Gerrard in the event of a managerial change, as Arne Slot’s position comes under increasing scrutiny.
The Reds have struggled in recent weeks, losing six of their last nine Premier League matches. While Slot’s side briefly returned to winning ways with a 2-0 victory over West Ham, they were held 1-1 by Sunderland just 72 hours later.
Liverpool then suffered a dramatic 3-3 draw against Leeds United on Saturday, with Ao Tanaka scoring a stoppage-time equaliser in a thrilling second half at Elland Road.
Slot, who guided Liverpool to the Premier League title just months ago, remains optimistic about turning the season around. “There is every reason to be positive,” he told reporters. However, the team’s 4-1 home defeat to PSV in the Champions League, which saw fans audibly jeering at full-time, has added pressure on the manager.
Amid the mounting speculation, DaveOCKOP reports that Gerrard is under consideration to step in on an interim basis if Slot is sacked. A return to Anfield would mark a compelling homecoming for the 45-year-old, who rose through Liverpool’s ranks to become one of the club’s all-time greats.
Gerrard previously managed Rangers from 2018 to 2021, winning the Scottish Premiership in 2020-21, before moving on to spells with Aston Villa and Al-Ettifaq. He recently revealed he was “very close” to returning as Rangers manager following Russell Martin’s departure but ultimately turned down the role.
Liverpool are also understood to be monitoring Julian Nagelsmann, whose availability could change after leading his side through next summer’s World Cup.
Meanwhile, tensions between Slot and star forward Mohamed Salah have become a focal point. Salah has started three consecutive games on the bench and claimed in a post-match interview against Leeds that his relationship with the manager has broken down.
