Cody Gakpo switched over from the opposing flank to make room for Florian Wirtz on the left, whilst fellow goalscorer Alexander Isak held on to his starting spot.
Two calls, which were soundly vindicated by the scoreline.
There’ll be no man more relieved than Alexander Isak to see him break his Premier League scoring duck with the Reds.
The Swede has been the subject of intense pressure following what was an emotionally charged summer move away from Newcastle.
Hopefully, a first league goal for his new employers will ease some of the strain for both player and manager heading into Sunderland next week.
Likewise, Slot is sure to have enjoyed what was arguably Florian Wirtz’s best performance in the famous red shirt (particularly in the first half).
West Ham result saves Slot’s job
There’s no question in our minds that Slot’s job was under threat going into the encounter with Nuno Espirito Santo’s West Ham.
Had the former Feyenoord boss followed a dire run of three straight defeats with a further loss in the capital, it would have been far from surprising to see the club consider taking serious action.
To put things into perspective, a defeat would have seen Liverpool languish 11 points behind Arsenal ahead of the Gunners playing their game in hand.
Potentially as many as 14 points off the top at this stage of the 2025/26 season is pretty damning.
Mind, we’ll need to see this foundation built on against Sunderland next week. But this is a result that ultimately buys Arne Slot more time to salvage the campaign.
