Arne Slot already admitted he wished he saw his family more given he made the move to Liverpool by himself. The Reds boss enjoyed a glittering season in his debut campaign in England, leading the club to their second Premier League title in five years.
However, the second season slump has hit the Dutchman hard with Liverpool sitting a lowly 12th after 12 games in what has so far been a dismal defence of their league title. With six league defeats to their name already, pressure has only intensified further since their 3-0 home defeat to Nottingham Forest this past weekend.
The struggles the Merseyside giants have endured this season has been unchartered territory for the club that has been mostly successful for almost a decade. The defeats and the scrutiny could be hitting Slot harder with his wife and two children remaining in Netherlands.
Slot and his wife, Mirjam, made the decision for her and their son Joep and daughter Isa to remain in their homeland as to make sure their children’s education was not disrupted by his decision to replace Jurgen Klopp.
It was after the Reds won the title that Slot opened up about the struggles of being away from his family and detailed the minimal amount of time he gets to see them during the season.
Speaking to Dutch outlet AD earlier this year, the 47-year-old said: “Anyone who is married and has a good marriage, I think I do, would like to see the children and the wife a bit more. My wife comes over for a couple of days every two weeks, the children unfortunately even less.”

Slot’s family did make the trip to Anfield last season when Liverpool’s Premier League title was confirmed after their 5-1 rout of Tottenham Hotspur. While revealing his daughter Isa was set to move in with him for three months while studying English in Manchester, Slot said his status as a public figure has affected his wife.
“She (Mirjam) finds that attention the hardest part of our lives,” the Reds boss added. “She already had that at Feyenoord. She also prefers to get take-out food instead of us sitting down together. She feels differently that she is being watched or judged.”

Despite being a Premier League-winning manager, Liverpool’s sudden drop in form and performance this season has placed Slot in the “firing line” according to Jamie Carragher. Speaking on Monday Night Football, the Reds icon admitted Slot’s position is now under pressure.
Carragher said: “Obviously the manager is the one in the firing line. Any manager with results like that, if they were part of the bottom four or a promoted team would be under pressure.
“There’s no doubt the manager is under pressure now with results like that on the back of being champions, but also the fact of what Liverpool spent in the summer.”
