Luis Enrique Has Made Feelings Clear On Liverpool After Being Named ‘No.1 Target’

Luis Enrique has made his feelings clear on Liverpool amid reports that he has been named as the number one target to become their new manager if Arne Slot is sacked.

Liverpool have now lost nine of their last 12 matches in all competitions after Tuesday’s 4-1 Champions League defeat to PSV.

They have fallen out of the top half of the Premier League, and are now behind Merseyside rivals Everton after the Toffees won 1-0 at Manchester United on Monday.

The next eight days could prove pivotal for Slot, as Liverpool have away matches at struggling West Ham and Leeds, and host Sunderland at Anfield on December 2.Play

Reds legend Jamie Carragher has claimed that the Dutchman has those three games to ‘save his job’, writing in The Telegraphthat anything less than seven points would make his position ‘untenable’.

Liverpool traditionally do not sack managers mid-season, with Roy Hodgson and Brendan Rodgers being the two exceptions in the last century.

Should Slot join that short list, The Sun claim that the Reds would initially approach Jurgen Klopp over taking over on an interim basis until the end of the season.

Their long-term target, it is reported, is PSG boss Enrique, who guided the French giants to their maiden Champions Leaguetitle last season.

The Spaniard has repeatedly stated that he one day hopes to manage in English football, telling FourFourTwo in as early as 2013: “I’d like to manage in England at some point. My wife wouldn’t like the weather – she’s from Barcelona and likes the sun.

“It would depend on the team and the football they played.”

In the same interview, Enrique revealed that he had studied how Liverpool played under Brendan Rodgers during his first season in charge: “I like the way Brendan Rodgers interprets the game, how he gets the team playing together, though I know it has been difficult for him in his first year at Liverpool.”

But perhaps more pertinent to his current situation are comments made in March 2025 regarding Liverpool.

PSG took on the Reds in the last 16 of last season’s Champions League, defeating them on penalties after two legs.

They won 2-1 at Anfield to level the tie 2-2 on aggregate, with Enrique stating ahead of the match: “Liverpool are one of the best teams in Europe in recent years.

“We’re going to face the team that has played the best so far in the Champions League this season. They won the Champions League recently.

“After the Jurgen Klopp era, it could have been difficult for Arne Slot to do better, but he has managed to create a perfect team that knows how to press, defend and attack.

“They know how to build a calculated attack as well as counter-attacks. They’re a very complete team.”
