Virgil van Dijk was caught by surprise on Tuesday when a post-match interviewer revealed he had once faced the Liverpool captain in a Champions League clash.

The Dutch defender had just helped his side beat Real Madrid 1–0 at Anfield, with Alexis Mac Allister scoring the decisive goal. The win lifted Arne Slot’s team to sixth place, only behind Madrid on goal difference.

During the interview, Van Dijk realised that the man asking him questions was former Legia Warsaw forward Michal Zyro.

Back in 2014, Zyro played twice against the Dutchman’s Celtic in Champions League qualifiers, even scoring and assisting in Legia’s 4–1 and 2–0 victories.

Despite Legia’s dominance, Celtic progressed after their opponents were disqualified for fielding an ineligible player.

Zyro said: “I’m really happy to see you,” to which Van Dijk replied: “So you scored two goals back then and now you interview me.”

Zyro continued: “Yeah, because I joined Wolverhampton for the next two to three years and I got really bad injury there by the knee.”

Van Dijk replied: “Sorry to hear”, while Zyro stated: “But I really enjoy being here and it’s really special to speak with you.”

Van Dijk concluded: “As long as you are happy that’s the most important thing. So keep doing what you’re doing.”
