In the build-up to the Champions League clash between Liverpool and Real Madrid, claims emerged in the Spanish media that Virgil van Dijk was waiting for the La Liga giants’ offer to sign him as a free agent before agreeing to stay at Anfield.
However, according to Fabrizio Romano, such a claim is not 100 per cent correct.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano insisted that Van Dijk’s preference was always to remain a crucial part of the Liverpool project.
“But it’s normal sometimes for agents when you have a client, especially a world-class player, to reach out to clubs and understand situations,” said the journalist, clarifying how links with Real Madrid could have appeared.
Van Dijk ended up signing a new two-year contract with Liverpool and remains an undisputed starter and the team captain who is set to start against Real Madrid on Tuesday night.
