Alexander Isak may be banned from partaking in a very specific ritual at Liverpool despite being on the verge of completing his British record transfer to Anfield. The saga surrounding the Swedish striker has rumbled on all transfer window but reached its conclusion on deadline day, as a deal was struck to see Isak complete his dream move after weeks of protesting Newcastle’s reluctance.
Isak is bound to have a major impact straight out of the gate and is expected to play a key role in the Reds being able to successfully defend their Premier League crown. However, there will be one thing that the 25-year-old is prohibited from doing, even if it’s not winning titles at his new club.
Why Isak May be Banned From Touching ‘This is Anfield’ Sign
It has become a routine for many Reds players down the years to touch the ‘This is Anfield’ sign that hangs above the tunnel as the XI walk out onto the pitch before many a crunch match. However, an old rule implemented by a previous manager may mean that the former Real Sociedad star will have to wait for his chance to touch it.
Ex-Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp installed a policy during his tenure at the club that meant that players who hadn’t won a trophy in the famous red jersey were not allowed to touch the sign as they made their way out onto the hallowed turf.
Explaining his decision at the time, the German stated: “I’ve told my players not to touch the ‘This Is Anfield’ sign until they win something! It’s a sign of respect. I touched it when I was manager of Borussia Dortmund, but we lost 4-0.”
It is unknown whether that rule still applies under Arne Slot, but if it is, Isak will have to wait patiently for his chance.
Of course, the Swede was on hand to score against Liverpool in last season’s Carabao Cup final, with his finish ultimately proving crucial in Newcastle ending the seven-decade trophyless run.
That same competition will provide Isak with his first chance of silverware for his new club, with the final taking place on the 22nd March 2026.
