Liverpool has finally received the go-ahead to finalize an impressive signing.

A significant target for Liverpool is currently being actively pushed out by his club, while reports have outlined Liverpool’s alternative plan should the associated costs become too prohibitive.

This summer, Liverpool has been among the top spenders, although many exciting developments are anticipated in the last three weeks of the transfer window.

The Reds are still determined to break the British transfer record for the second time in quick succession by acquiring Alexander Isak.

Additionally, a new centre-back is needed to fill the gap left by Jarell Quansah after his £35m transfer to Bayer Leverkusen.

Throughout the summer, Liverpool has expressed strong interest in Marc Guehi, the Crystal Palace and England star.

Newcastle has also shown interest, but they have since signed Malick Thiaw from AC Milan.

Chelsea was also mentioned as a potential suitor following Levi Colwill’s ACL injury and Enzo Maresca’s public call for a new central defender. However, according to The Telegraph, the Blues are NOT expected to pursue Guehi.

This situation appears to have opened the door for Liverpool, and reporter Ben Jacobs has indicated that Crystal Palace is now actively looking to sell.

“Palace wants to sell Guehi now because he won’t sign a new contract, but the England defender is willing to see out his contract if the right opportunity doesn’t arise,” Jacobs wrote. “He is not pushing for a move away.”

Guehi is in the final year of his contract, and Palace chairman Steve Parish has acknowledged that losing such a valuable asset for nothing next summer would be catastrophic.

Therefore, Guehi can depart immediately if appropriate offers are made. Palace has set Guehi’s value at £40m, which Liverpool considers steep given the player’s declining contract.

However, as competitors for his signature diminish, Palace’s chances of benefiting from a bidding war are dwindling.

Liverpool’s alternative strategy has been confirmed.

According to the latest report from Florian Plettenberg of Sky Germany, Guehi remains Liverpool’s primary target for the centre-back position, while Parma’s Giovanni Leoni is considered their backup option.

“Liverpool FC is seriously evaluating the talented 18-year-old centre-back Giovanni Leoni,” Plettenberg stated. “He is highly regarded on their list.

“If a transfer for Marc Guehi does not materialize, Liverpool may pursue Leoni instead.

“Numerous top Italian clubs are interested in him, but Liverpool is making progress behind the scenes.”

Internally, Liverpool views a potential move for Guehi as a ‘market opportunity’ that, if the price is favorable, would be too advantageous to overlook.

The Telegraph’s update, which reported Chelsea’s decision to bypass Guehi, labeled Liverpool as the ‘favourites’ to acquire the 25-year-old.

As noted by Jacobs, Guehi is receptive to the idea of joining the Reds but is not actively pushing for a transfer, placing the responsibility on Liverpool to negotiate a club-to-club agreement with Palace to move forward.
